Scholarship applications available

The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club scholarship applications are available for fall 2012 – Spring 2013.

The club was founded on June 29, 1899, in Indian Territory by a group  from the female seminaries for the purpose of education with a desire to help others. The early members foresaw the work and services that needed to be rendered for Cherokee people. In keeping with that tradition, the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club awards scholarships each year to students. For the 2011-12 school year, 10 students received scholarship funding.

The Cherokee women played a significant  role in the life of the tribe. The early members saw the work that needed to be done and services to be rendered, such as the education of Cherokee students, who receive $600 per year for four years. That is why each year the Pocahonta club  awards scholarships to deserving Cherokee students.

A fundraiser for scholarships is scheduled May 19 at Dog Iron Ranch, birthplace of Will Rogers in Oologah at 11 a.m. There will be a traditional meal, entertainment, activities and people dressed in period regalia.
