Chouteau wins opener over Hulburt

CHOUTEAU — The Chouteau Wildcats edged out Hulburt, 59-55, in their season opener on the road.

Chouteau sophomore guard Arlis Aslip contributed 17 points, while Matthew Bendure added 14.

“Matthew has been a role player his whole life, and he’s really stepped up now that he’s gotten a chance to be more of a focal point of our offense,” Chouteau coach Travis Wheeler said. “Arlis is a sophomore that has always been a scorer. He’s one of those kids that never met a shot he didn’t like.

“This was a tough win for us tonight, and I’m very pleased with how we were able to battle against a very physical team.”

Hulbert pushed ahead early and held a 13-7 lead midway through the opening quarter, but Chouteau battled back and got within one, 16-15,  at the end of the first 12 minutes.

Neither team had more than a four-point advantage in the second quarter, and the two sides took a 31-31 score into intermission.

The Wildcats pulled ahead in the third quarter and used a 15-5 run that overlapped the fourth quarter to pull ahead 52-43.

Hulbert narrowed the gap to within five with four minutes to play, but Chouteau was able to stave off the comeback attempt and hold on for the road win.

“This was a good hard-fought win,” Wheeler said. “This is a tough gym to play in, and they’ve got some tough kids. (Hulbert) is going to be good this season.”
