Hot-shooting Pirates earn 23-point win

CATOOSA — Locust Grove’s Pirates put on a shooting exhibition Tuesday night.

Everyone took turns. Everyone took shots.

Seemed like everyone made shots.

And nine of them did.

Inside. Outside. Acrobatic. Didn’t matter.

With 57 percent of their shots finding their marks, the Pirates gunned down Catoosa, 64-41, in a high school basketball game.

With nine Pirates scoring, and with the reserves seeing considerable playing time, Locust Grove never shot less than 50 percent in a quarter.

For the game, the Pirates hit 26-of-45 shots.

But that percentage pales in comparison to the Pirates’ 3-point accuracy. They hit 7-of-10 from beyond the 19-foot, 9-inch arc.

Starting with the hottest of the hot, junior David Stone did not miss from 3-point range. He was 5-for-5 from that distance. His only two misses came from inside the arc.

Senior Justin Bailey was 6-for-7 from the field, missing only in the first quarter. And he tossed in both free-throw opportunities.

Junior Reed Bryant made good on 5-of-7 attempts and junior reserve Colton Witt went 3-for-3.

“They just kept finding the player with the hot hand,” Locust Grove coach Ronnie Maple said.

“That’s what team basketball is all about.”

And as a team, the Pirates scuttled Catoosa right from the start.

Stone threw in his first three treys and the Pirates were in front, 11-2, and on their way to their 15th win.

Their lead reached 12 by halftime and 19 in the third quarter.

Catoosa never had a chance. Certainly no chance the way Locust Grove was shooting, and the way the Indians were not shooting.

With the Pirates hitting 6-of-9 shots in the fourth quarter, and Catoosa going 3-for-15, the gap grew to 28.

The 6-2 Bryant led all rebounders with eight, helping the Pirates control the boards, 32-20.

On a couple of occasions, he appeared to defy gravity as he went above the crowd for rebounds. “He can flat-out elevate,” Maple said.

Teammate Robert Shelly was limited to six points, all in the third period, but he complemented Bryant on the boards, pulling down seven.
