Pryor opens with Bishop Kelley

The Pryor Tigers varsity boys basketball team will open the season against Bishop Kelley at home Friday.

The Tigers are coming off a 10-13 season.

Sixteen-year head coach Greg Arnold said expectations are high heading into this season.

“We have three starters back, with two of them as our leading scorers,” Arnold said. “We also have a little size.”

The three returning starters include 6-foot-7-inch forward Chase Ross, 6-foot-2-inch guard Foster McCollough and 5-foot-9-inch point guard Zach Baumart.

Ross averaged averaged 15 points per game last year and Baumart averaged 12 points per game.

The two new starters are 6-foot-2-inch sophomore Robert Ross and Daniel Fraley, a Chouteau transfer who sat out his first year.

Pryor will continue to run a motion offense.

“We like to move the ball and look for open shots,” Arnold said. “This is a year we have six or seven guys who can contribute.”

On defense, this squad will largely play man-to-man and occasionally mix things up with a matchup-zone, depending on the opponent.

Arnold said he has a group he can press with if needed.

“This group has a make-up to do a lot of different things,” Arnold said. “I feel like if you let teams feel comfortable they’re going to beat you and if you give up easy baskets they’re going to beat you. Preventing those are our two main goals.”

Arnold said he is satisfied with team chemistry in the preseason.

Pryor lost last year to Bishop Kelley, 55-46.
