Tigers can’t pull off third win over Vinita, lose 44-41

PRYOR - The 5A No. 20 Pryor’s Tigers bid to beat 4A No. 11 Vinita for the third time this season came up short Friday as a Parker Ballard potential game tying three-pointer clanged off the rim. Vinita won the game, 44-41.

The game was tight from the beginning. Pryor had an 8-5 lead in the first, but Vinita finished the quarter on a 8-0 run to lead 13-8.

Pryor pulled closer in the second and trailed by just one at the break, 22-21.

The Tigers got the lead back in the third, and held it at 35-33 going into the final frame.

Neither team could find any separation in the fourth quarter, but two Hornet free throws with 2:13 to go proved to be the difference. Brady Jarboe was able to get one of them back with 1:53 to go, but Vinita was able to run the clock all the way down to the 15 second mark, forcing Pryor to foul. Jake Roach hit two more free throws to make it 44-41.

Pryor got the ball down the floor, and Ballard had to rush a three from the corner. It hit off the far side of the rim, and Vinita came away with the victory.

Ballard led Pryor with 14 points and four rebounds. Vinita’s Jake Bullard led all scorers with 17.

Tigerettes fight hard in loss to Vinita

The Pryor Tigerettes gave the 4A No. 3 Vinita Lady Hornets a good battle, especially in the first half, Friday, but couldn’t match their firepower in a 61-38 loss.

Vinita started the game on a 8-0 run, but Pryor got hot from behind the arch and only trailed by one late in the quarter. Taylor Arnold hit two, three-pointers and Brittany Stapleton hit another as Pryor trailed 15-12 at the end of the first.

Behind the strong post play of Kaitlyn Spurgeon, Vinita was able to get a little bit of a lead in the second, going up 33-24 by the break. Spurgeon had 16 of their points.

Pryor was held scoreless for roughly the first 5:30 minutes of the third quarter, and Vinita was able to put the game away. Vinita amped up the pressure on defense, causing some Tigerette turnovers. By the end of the third, Vinita led 49-26.
