Outdoorsmen put city on the map

WOODWARD — We're No. 32!

But that's not bad, considering Woodward made Outdoor Life Magazine's top 35 best hunting and fishing locations throughout the entire country.

It gets even better knowing Woodward was the only Oklahoma town selected for inclusion in the top 35 list.  The top 5 towns were No. 1 Appleton, Wis.; No. 2 Salmon, Ind.; No. 3 Venice, La.; No. 4 Rapid City, S.D., and No. 5 Centerville, Iowa.

The list of top hunting and fishing towns is compiled by editors of Outdoor Life Magazine, who then provide a brief description of what makes each town a great getaway for outdoor enthusiasts.

Of Woodward, the OLM editors wrote about the opportunities for deer hunters, asserting a spillover of deer population from Kansas is creating a plentiful supply of trophy bucks available here.

However, there are a variety of hunting and fishing opportunities nearby, as showcased by events such as the lieutenant governor's annual turkey hunt that is held locally each April and the two-man bass pond fishing tournament sponsored by the Woodward Rotary Club each spring.

Andrew McKean, editor-in-chief for Outdoor Life, said the magazine chose to focus on deer hunting because at the time of writing, that is what the local buzz was about.

McKean said OLM found out about Woodward through writers and editors that travel throughout the country, as well as hearing from its readers and guides to find out what's happening.

Reader input plays a big part, he said, noting OLM believes its readers are some of the most talented sportsmen in the nation, so their opinions count heavily toward putting the list together.

"Woodward has not been on the list before," McKean said. "The best ways to get on it or to remain on it are to maintain or improve the hunting and fishing opportunities in the area and let us know (what's being done) by going to outdoorlife.com, and tell us why you think the area is a great place for outdoorsmen."
