BARTLESVILLE (AP) – It was just a matter of time before some enlightened collegiate coach would recognize what folks around Delaware County have known for a quite some time; the fact that Kansas’s Corey Cowan would be an asset on any team at any level.
That enlightened college coach turned out to be Jason Beschta of Oklahoma Wesleyan University, located in Bartlesville. Beschta signed the Comet mainstay to a letter of intent prior to last Saturday’s Oklahoma Indian All-State Game.
Following the game the Eagle coach was quick to praise his future charge, who pulled off a double-double in the contest.
“We’ve been able to watch Corey work out some while he was here and it’s pretty obvious we’re excited to get him. On top of everything else we know about his talents, we’ve heard a lot of good things about him off of the court too.”
Cowan, the son of David and Gloria Cowan, was the anchor of a resurgence in the Kansas boys basketball program. Under first year coach Dale Akin, the Comets marched all the way to the area tournament this past season.
In his typical style, the Comet all-star left nothing in the dressing room for the entire regular and postseason, actually prompting a rival journalist for an opposing team to lament, “Somebody forgot to tell that guy that they weren’t supposed to win.”
Cowan led the Kansas squad to just one game shy of the state tournament, narrowly losing to Tulsa’s Victory Christian Conquerors at the qualifying game in Ft. Gibson.
In his Comet career, Cowan was named to the Super Seven All-Conference Team in 2010 and 2011, as well as being named the Conference MVP this past season. The hard working Kansas grad was also named to the Afton Coca Cola Classic All-Tournament team in 2010 and garnered the Tournament’s MVP award in both 2011 and 2012. He has also been named to the KURM Dream Team in 2010 and 2012.
In an earlier conversation with Comet Head Coach Dale Akin, Cowan was described as, “The guy we’re going to go to. There’s no big secret about it. Other teams will have to handle Corey if they’re going to handle us.”
Basketball is obviously a part of the Cowan gene pool as his twin sister Courtney inked with the Lady RiverHawks of Northeastern State earlier this year. Proud father David Cowan stated succinctly, “We’re going to be on the road a lot over the next few years, but this is what we’ve all been working toward. It’ll be fun.”
The OKWU Campus is nestled between Bartlesville ’s upscale suburban neighborhoods and the City’s award winning golf course, whose placid pastoral setting is the home of over 700 students. The Eagles are in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Activities) and play in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC). The MCAC has eight institutions stretching from Oklahoma City to Omaha and Salina, Kan. to Springfield, Mo.
