Pirates look to bounce back

LOCUST GROVE — The Locust Grove Pirates look to bounce back at Lincoln Christian tomorrow, after three straight losses.

The Pirates’ record dropped to 4-4 last week after losing at home to Dewey 50-32, in an offensive showdown.

Pirate junior receiver Aaron Conway attributes the loss to self-inflicted team play.

“I feel we let the game slip out of our hands,” Conway said. “We shot ourselves in the foot by turning the ball over.”

But the Pirates are trying to put last week’s loss, as well as the two previous two, behind them.

Junior running back Cameron McIntyre is looking ahead.

“We’re just going to keep playing hard, getting better keep playing as a team, put last week behind us and prepare for this week’s game,” McIntyre said.

Locust Grove will face a 5-3 Lincoln Christian squad that  is coming off a blowout win against Westville.

The Bulldogs are averaging  more than 210 passing yards per game and 162 rushing yards.

Senior quarterback Austin Graver leads the Lincoln Christian offense with 1,694 passing yards,  19 touchdowns and only three interceptions.

The Pirates are aware it will take more than talent to beat the Bulldogs.

“Our intensity, our heart and our desire to win this game,” Conway said, will be the key to pulling off an upset.

On paper, the Pirates appear outmatched. However, morale is high.

“We always go into a game well prepared and expecting to win,” said junior defensive back Traden Sokoloski.

In the wake of three consecutive losses, maintaining such an attitude might be difficult,  but Sokoloski said a  motivating coaching staff helps the team keep a positive attitude.

Locust Grove will try to put their record back above .500  at Lincoln Christian, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m.
