Salina divides 2 on road

TAHLEQUAH — Salina baseball coach Matt Simmons wanted to see how his seventh-ranked Wildcats stacked up against No. 2-ranked Eufaula.

He called the Ironheads and invited them to meet in Tahlequah Thursday where the Wildcats were also playing Tahlequah.

Simmons’ Wildcats stacked up pretty well with the Ironheads, who were Class 3A state runners-up last season.

Salina’s Jake Johnson and Eufaula’s Brady Colbert squared off in an outstanding pitching duel, but it was the Ironheads who came out on top, 2-0.

The Wildcats, though, did bring home a win from their trip, defeating Tahlequah, 2-1, scoring a run in the top of the eighth.

Colbert, showing a 90-mph fastball, scattered three hits — to Lucien Littledave, Clayton Eubanks and Jake Tolbert.

Eufaula punched across runs in the third and sixth innings. Johnson struck out four and gave up four hits.

With its sixth straight win, Eufaula is 16-2.

Tolbert took the mound against Class 5A No. 10 Tahlequah and pitched a three-hitter.

The Wildcats trailed, 1-0, entering the seventh. They tied things in that inning, and came up with the winning run in the eighth.

It was Salina’s second win over Tahlequah in a week. At Salina, the Wildcats won, 9-3.

After Thursday’s game, Tahlequah is 12-5. Salina is 11-4 and will travel to Adair Monday.
