Salina girls, Chouteau boys get payback in Mayes County clash

CHOUTEAU - Revenge was sweet for two teams in Chouteau Friday night.

The Salina Lady Wildcats avenged their Liberty Tournament loss to Chouteau, while the Chouteau boys did the same, beating Salina.

In the opener, it looked like Chouteau was going to get another victory early on, as they sprinted out to a 13-4 lead.

From that point until halftime, Salina completely controlled the game. The Lady Wildcats had a 9-0 run to end the quarter, and extended that into the second quarter to a 12-0 run. A three-pointer by L.J. Hochstetler looked like it might end the run, but Salina didn’t let up. To end the half, Salina outscored Chouteau 14-0 and led 29-16.

The lead got a little bigger in the third as Salina kept charging, going up 39-23.

In the game at the Liberty Tournament, Chouteau was down double digits as well, and fought back for the win. That came close to happening again Friday.

Chouteau’s Jocelyn Couch gave the Ladycats a big boost off the bench as she kept posting up inside, and Chouteau was getting her the ball. She scored 16 points, all in the second half to get the game within striking distance. However, Salina wasn’t going to let another win slip away and came away with the 54-45 win.

Courtney Backward is turning into the star many people knew she could be. Backward has become more assertive this season, and it paid off Friday with 28 points. The quick sophomore continually got to the basket and scored over and around players much bigger than her. Reesa Cowan also had a good night for the Lady Wildcats with 10 points and six rebounds.

Couch led Chouteau with 16. Hochstetler continued her hot streak with 15. Reanna Keys had seven rebounds.

Chouteau boys have big second half for win

Chouteau battled from an early double-digit deficit to come away with the 61-50 win in the night capper.

It was all Salina early, as, despite foul trouble, the Wildcats jumped out to a 19-8 lead behind Dillon Manchell’s nine points and Ty Stewart’s five rebounds.

But Chouteau woke up in the second, getting as close as three points at 21-18. Salina was able to hold the lead and took a 28-22 advantage into the break.

Chouteau would take the lead in the third on a Dwight McElroy layup, making it 36-35. A Josh Anderson runner in the final seconds of the quarter would put Chouteau up 38-36 going in the final quarter. Anderson sparked the comeback in the third, scoring 11 of Chouteau’s 16 points.

It would be all Chouteau in the fourth, as they outscored Salina 23-14 to come away with the win.

McElroy had a double-double for Chouteau with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Anderson led them in scoring with 15. Josh Mahan had 14. Salina’s Manchell led all scorers with 17. Dalton Daniels had 10. Stewart had eight rebounds.

Chouteau will get back from Christmas Break Jan. 4 when they travel to the Muskogee Shrine Tournament. Salina will also be in action that day at the Locust Grove Tournament.
