Salina boys, Chouteau boys and girls reach finals at Liberty

LIBERTY - Both Chouteau teams got first round wins Thursday in the Liberty Tournament.

The girls beat Haskell 41-31 and the boys beat the home team Liberty 52-43.

The Ladycats fell behind big in their opener against Haskell.

The Lady Haymakers jumped out to a 15-2 lead. But from that point on, it was all Chouteau.

The Ladycats cut it to 19-10 by the half, and took the lead in the third.

Going into the fourth quarter it was 30-28 in favor of Chouteau.

The Ladycats owned the fourth period, outscoring Haskell 11-3.

Catterina Browning had another double-double for the Ladycats with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Reanna Keys poured in 23 points.

Cheyenne Helms had six assists and three steals.

Chouteau boys take over 2nd half for win

It was a tale of two halves for the boys, as the Wildcats only scored 16 points in the first half, but scored 36 in the second.

“We just started to wake up,” said Head Coach Travis Wheeler. Wheeler said that Liberty played zone the first half and wanted to slow down the game.

Wheeler said that his team played with that in the first half.

In the second half, it was a different story.

“We took control of the tempo, attacked the zone, and took over the game,” Wheeler said.

The biggest difference was a trio of players in Josh Mahan, Dwight McElroy and Josh Shive, who only had four points combined in the first half, but 28 in the

second.
