2A Tigers hold off late charging Claremore team

PRYOR - The 2A Pryor Tigers fought off an emotionally charged Claremore Pixley Pirate team for a 5-2 victory Monday.

Late in the game, Claremore thought they had some unfavorable calls, and they got fired up for the final innings. However, Corey Howard shut the Pirates down, only giving up two runs over seven innings.

Howard didn’t give up a hit in the first three innings, and Pryor was able to take the lead in the bottom of the third. Zac Hammock walked to start the inning and Treyce Epps singled to put runners at first and second. Brett Mitchell hit a blooper single into right to load the bases. Two batters later, Keifer Curtsinger cleared the bases with one swing, a double in the right center field gap.

Pryor added two more in the fourth. Claremore walked four out of the first five batters they faced in the fourth, bringing in a run. Mitchell added a RBI single to make the score 5-0.

The Pirates got their first two in the top of the fifth, and had the bases loaded for more. The Tigers got a fielder’s choice at home, then a double play to get out of the jam.

That would be the last good chance Claremore would have to score some runs. Howard allowed only one hit in the final two innings, and the Tigers came up with the win.

Howard struck out five over seven innings in the win.

The 2A Tigers are off until next week, when they play in the 2A League Tournament in Pryor. Game times are to be announced.
