Tigers struggle, earn spot in 5th place game

PRYOR - Even the best teams have their bad days.

The 3A Pryor Tigers had trouble getting things going during pool play of the Pryor Tigers Summer Classic, losing their first two, but getting a win by forfeit in the third game.

In the opener Thursday, it was just one of those nights as Pryor lost to Rogers, Ark., 10-0 in five innings.

Rogers scored two in the first and four in the fourth and fifth. Pryor got the bases loaded in the fifth, but couldn’t get any runs across to keep the game going.

Tatyn Fee was the only Tigers to have more than one hit. Fee was 2-for-2 with two singles.

The Tigers bats came alive Friday afternoon, but Pryor couldn’t slow the Oologah attack, losing 12-10 in a wild one.

Pryor got on the board first with four runs in the opening inning. Blake Heston drew a walk and moved to third on a passed ball. Dalton Murphy brought him in with a RBI double. Christian Doty followed that with a towering shot over the left field wall, making it 3-0. P.J. Stimson narrowly missed another home run, going down in the zone to get it and bouncing it off the left field wall. Shane Holloway brought him with a RBI single.

Oologah fired back, scoring six runs of their own in the top of the second.

Pryor lost the lead but took it right back in the bottom of the second. Rhett Eichelberger doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a Blake Heston single. Heston got to second after the throw home. Doty brought both of them in with a single to right. Stimson drew a walk and Zekke Stump plated Doty with a RBI single, a blooper that dropped into right field.

Things quieted down for a bit as neither team scored runs in the third. Pryor got one in the bottom of the fourth on an error, making it 8-6.

Oologah did them one better in the fifth, tying the game up at 8-8.

The sixth was the difference as the Mustangs got four runs on three base hits to make the lead 12-8.

Pryor rallied in the final inning. The Tigers were down to their final strike, but Holloway was able to coax a walk, and Stump singled to center. Ryan Hendricks walked to load the bases. Fee struck out which should have ended the game, but the ball got past the catcher and the lead runner scored making it 12-10. However, the Tigers ran out of lives and a groundout to third ended the rally.

The Tigers were able to pound out 17 hits in the game to just eight Mustang hits.

In the final pool play game Friday night, a faulty light post ended the game after two and a half innings. Claremore decided to take the forfeit then play in the 11 a.m. game Saturday instead of waiting for the light post to be fixed. The teams were tied up until that point. Claremore got a run in the first, but Pryor took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Heston started things off with a single to left, then stole second base. Holloway singled, pushing him to third. Murphy hit a hard grounder back to the pitcher, who couldn’t make the play cleanly. He tried to come home with the ball, but Heston beat out the throw, tying it 1-1. An error on a Stump groundball scored Holloway. Doty hit a sacrifice fly to score Murphy.

Claremore got two more runs in the top of the second to tie the game back up. Both teams were scoreless in the bottom of the second and top of the third, and the light post went out in the middle of the third.

Pryor played in the fifth place game Saturday. Look for those results in Tuesday’s edition. The 3A Tigers travel to Vinita Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
