2A Tigers finish state runner-up; 3A Tigers headed to state

PRYOR - It was the way championship games should be played. A day after getting beat by Woodward 10-2, the Tigers played a gem Sunday

afternoon, but came up short 2-1.

Saturday night, Woodward showed their muscle. They pounded out 11 hits and held Pryor in check.

That led to Sunday, where the Tigers could have easily given up after such a tough loss Saturday. However, they rose to the occasion and

nearly came away with the victory.

“It tells you a lot about their character,” said Pryor Head Coach Gerald Osborne. “There are great days in store.”

Osborne hugged each one of his players after the game was over to thank them for the fine performance this

season.

The Travelers are made up of terrific baseball players from the Oklahoma and Texas panhandle. Pryor consists of future Tiger players, all of whom will be freshmen,

sophomores and juniors next season.

Shane Holloway got the nod to pitch Sunday against the talented Woodward

lineup. He gave the Travelers everything he could, holding them to four hits and two runs over seven innings.

“He could have folded early on,” Osborne said. Woodward was able to get people on base, but Holloway kept

finding ways to get the Tigers out of the inning. The defense also stepped up, only

committing one error in the game on a failed pick off. Holloway only had one

strikeout, so there were a lot of balls put in play.

Pryor took the lead in the second when Zekke Stump hit a RBI single up the middle to drive in Christian Doty.

That lead held until the top of the sixth. Woodward’s Braden Hunt, Pampa, Texas, took a pitch low and away over the left field fence.

Osborne said it was a good pitch, but Hunt just did a great job of getting a hold of it. Hunt had four home runs in the tournament.

In the top of the seventh, tournament MVP Mitchell Killgo, also of Pampa, Texas, hit his fourth home run of the tournament just over the right field fence. That was the deciding run. Woodward’s Logan Hunter finished out the complete game with a 1-2-3 seventh.

Holloway and Hunter

both gave championship

performances. Both pitched complete games and only gave up four hits.

Stump got two of Pryor’s four hits. He was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

3A Tigers use 10-run inning to beat Salina

PRYOR - The 3A Pryor Tigers advanced to the state tournament Saturday by

beating Salina, 10-1.

Salina took the lead in the third when Taylor Morris drove in Jace Squirrel with a

sacrifice fly.

That lead held until the fourth inning, when Pryor was able to get their offense going. Ben Jacks blasted a three-run home run to give Pryor the lead. After a walk, P.J. Stimson drove in Hunter Wood with a RBI single. Pryor got their fifth run on a passed ball, and Rhett Eichelberger scored two with a RBI single. Pitcher Wesley Rhodes was called for a balk, which brought in another run. Jacks got his fourth and fifth RBIs of the inning with a 2-RBI single a few batters later.

Behind 10-1, Salina

threatened in the fifth, but Jacks was able to get the Tigers the win on the mound. He only gave up three hits over five innings of work.

The Tigers will start the American Legion State Tournament Thursday in Choctaw. Time and opponent is to be announced.

PRYOR - The Pryor 3A Tigers advanced to the

championship round Friday night with a win over Salina. The Tigers won 9-1.

Stimson got Pryor started with one big swing, a 3-run home run over the centerfield wall. That came in the top of the second.

Pryor did the rest of the scoring in the third inning. Dalton Murphy and Jacks hit back-to-back 2-RBI doubles. A few batters later, Tatyn Fee added a RBI single. Two

batters later, Blake Heston hit a groundout to shortstop that scored a run.

Salina got a run in the

bottom of the third on an error.

Salina played Dewey Saturday afternoon, and the winner of that game moved on to play Pryor once again. Another game could be played Sunday if Pryor doesn’t win the game Saturday. Look for those results in Tuesday’s edition.

Tatyn Fee pitched the

complete game for Pryor and struck out six in five innings.

Murphy hit another RBI double in the second. The Tigers got another run on a passed ball, and a third on a balk.

Ponca City got on the board in the third with two runs of their own to cut the lead to

7-2.

Chris Ashley hit a RBI

double in the third to put Pryor up 8-0. Heston hit into a

fielder’s choice, but it was good enough to score a run. With the bases loaded, Wood cleared them with a 3-RBI triple. Gabe Littlefield followed with a groundout to second that scored the sixth run of the inning and put Pryor up 13-2.

In the top of the fourth, Ponca City added a run to make it 13-3.

In the bottom of the inning, Brooner drew a bases loaded walk, and Heston followed with a bases clearing double. Stump drew another bases loaded walk in the fourth to push the lead out to 18-3.

SALINA - A sacrifice fly and two Dewey outfielders colliding propelled Salina to a late

victory Thursday.

The Wildcats were down 9-8 going into the seventh. Wesley Rhodes got Ty Stewart across with a sacrifice fly and Chad Backward hit a fly ball into left center that caused the Dewey center and left fielders to

collide and brought in Squirrel. Rhodes shut down Dewey in the seventh to get the win.

Salina got on the board first with a Stewart RBI double and a Squirrel RBI single.

Dewey took the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs.

In the second inning, Morris hit a line drive to left field that bounced over the left fielder’s head. He motored around the bases and was able to get a inside the park home run. Dalton Reynolds also scored on the hit.

Dewey took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. They added one more run in the fourth to hold a 6-4 lead.

Salina grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth with a 2-RBI double by Squirrel and two runs on passed balls.

Not to be outdone, Dewey got the lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, and just needed to keep Salina from scoring in the top of the seventh. However, the Wildcats didn’t go down and got the two runs they needed.

Claremore matched those three runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the lead to 8-4.

Pryor added two more runs in the fifth with a RBI double by Brooner and bases loaded walk drawn by Holloway.

Heston got a RBI double in the sixth to push the lead out to 11-4. Claremore was able to get one more run across the bottom of the sixth, but Pryor matched it with a RBI double by Ashley in the seventh.

Ponca City rallies late, beats Adair

ADAIR - Adair let a late lead slip away Wednesday night in the opening round of the Legion 2A State Tournament, 6-4 to Ponca City.

The Warriors were missing a few starters who were away at church camp, forcing them to bring up players from their A squad.

Adair trailed most of the game 1-0, but were able to get four runs across in the top of the fifth. The first two runs were scored on a dropped fly ball, and the third was on a double steal. Vance Purcell got caught in a rundown between second and third, allowing Chris Wannell to score from third. Christian Luper brought Purcell in with a RBI double.

Ponca City closed the gap at 4-2 in the fifth, and took the lead in the sixth with four runs. Adair was not able to respond in the top of the

seventh.

PRYOR - With the bases loaded and nobody out, Holloway came in and saved the 3A Tigers from defeat Tuesday, 9-8, over Carthage, Mo.

The Tigers went into the top of the seventh with a 9-6 lead, but the Merchants got two runs across and loaded the bases. Holloway stepped in, struck out the first batter, and got the second one to hit into a game ending double play. Heston fielded the ball, touched second and fired it to first to beat the runner and preserve the win.

The game was back-and-forth from the beginning. The Merchants took a 2-0 lead, but Pryor moved ahead in the third 3-2. Heston hit a line drive triple to the left center field wall which scored Stump

and Holloway. Eichelberger

followed with a groundout to short that was good enough to get Heston in.

Pryor added to the lead in the fourth. Eichelberger hit a RBI double, which brought in Stump. Murphy followed with double of his own that scored Holloway and Eichelberger.

Carthage evened it up in the fifth with a grand slam by the Merchants big clean up man, 6’5” Kyle Wicklund.

That lead held until the bottom of the sixth, when Ben Jacks brought home two runs with a one-out triple. Heston had single to left center once again, and Murphy hit a hot shot off the pitcher’s arm. Both scored on Jacks’ triple. Stimson brought in the ninth and deciding run with a RBI single.

In the opener, Pryor got two runs in the first off of two throwing errors on the same play to take the early 2-0 lead.

Holloway got a RBI single in the third, bringing in Heston. Gabe Littlefield grounded out later in the inning, but it was enough to get Brooner home.

The Tigers sealed the deal in the fourth with five runs. The first run came on an error. The second was the product of a perfect hit-and-run. Brooner took off for second pulling the

second baseman with him and Holloway hit in the hole between second and first. That brought in Heston. Brooner scored on a passed ball. Horton and Ryan Hendricks had back-to-back RBI

singles to lift the score to 9-0.

Ashley was in control on the mound as he pitched the first four innings and only gave up one hit. Holloway pitched the fifth and put the Miners down one-two-three. Holloway was
