LG wrestling team undefeated

LOCUST GROVE — The Locust Grove wrestling team improved their record to 7-0 after defeating Salina and Hulbert Tuesday night.

The Pirates lost one match during the Salina Tri, not including two weights forfeited.

Head Coach Johnny Cook was satisfied with his team’s performance.

“They performed well,” Cook said. “The injuries we’ve had to our kids, we’re not getting those guys back. So before we went to Geary I told the guys that those guys are out for the year. They have to rehab, they have to heal, and they’re not lacing up, so this is our team and we have to win it with these guys.”

Locust Grove wrestled at the Geary tournament Jan. 4-5, which Cook says is the toughest tournament in the state.

The Pirates placed fourth with 84.5 team points.

Broken Arrow won the tournament with 138 points and the Tigers are currently ranked second in class 6A.

Edmond North, who is ranked first in 6A, placed second.

Locust Grove was the smallest school in the tournament.

Tuttle, who is the best team in 4A, placed ninth. Cook was proud of his team’s performance at Geary.

“It was just outstanding,” said Geary. It illustrated to our guys that even though we’re still missing four or five people, it showed them that we still have an opportunity (to win a state title).”

The Pirates are currently ranked fourth in tournaments and will wrestle in the Yukon tournament Jan. 18-29.
