Lady Pirates hang tough, fall to Grove 5-3

LOCUST GROVE - The Locust Grove Lady Pirates suffered a narrow loss Wednesday, as the Grove Lady Ridgerunners came to town, winning 5-3.

The game was a pitcher’s duel early on as neither team could manage a run in the first two and half innings. The Lady Pirates were the first to strike with one in the bottom of the third.

Balie Neel got on base with a walk, then moved to second on a passed ball. She took off for third when the catcher mishandled another pitch, and the catcher overthrew third base, allowing Neel enough time to score.

Grove would strike back in the top of the fourth with four runs of their own.

The Lady Ridgerunners used back-to-back 2-RBI doubles to pull ahead 4-1.

Locust Grove cut the lead to one in the bottom of the sixth. Tracie Johnson drew a walk to start the inning and Kaylyn Henson singled to right. That brought up Cortney Warren who smashed a RBI single up the middle to make the score 4-2. After two Lady Pirates strikeouts, Henson scored on a passed ball to make the lead 4-3.

Grove got one back in the top of the seventh, and only gave up one hit in the bottom of the seventh to come out with the victory.

Locust Grove travels to Metro Christian today for a 4 p.m. game.
