PRYOR, OK — If you picked up your paper Tuesday and saw the words “Chuck Porter, Sports Editor” scrawled on a couple stories, I guess I need to apologize. I didn't have the time for a proper introduction.

As my title may lead you to rightly believe, I'm the new sports guy here on Adair Street.

And I am fired up.

I grew up in northeast Oklahoma and played football at Owasso High for four years, so I've been around the region and I'm passionate about high school sports.

For the last few years, I was transplanted to the sprawling metropolis of Shawnee, where I got my bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and started my career covering sports as an assistant at the local paper.

It's been a natural, if very sudden, transition for me coming to Pryor. I'm moving from the run-and-shoot life of a six-day daily covering 14 high schools and three colleges to coming home to the northeast (and best) part of the state to take on a three-day sports desk on my own.

I hope you can imagine my excitement to finally get a seat at the big kids' table.

I believe that local sports are the life blood of any good paper, and I'm committed to delivering the best, most in-depth content, analysis and coverage I can to the Pryor, Locust Grove, Salina, Adair and Chouteau communities. These kids work hard and their efforts deserve to be recognized.

I also plan to get a sports Twitter up soon, as well as continue to post content on the website, if you are an internet junkie like me.

Oh, and lest I forget: At least once a week in this space, I'll be bringing you some hard-hitting and 100-percent accurate opinions on a wide range of sports topics, from Thunder basketball to Big 12 football to that one guy at every high school baseball game that tries and fails to start The Wave.

The great thing about local papers is that information travels both ways. A paper needs feedback from its readers to really work. So, just as I hope you'll listen to what I have to say about local sports, I want to hear what you have to say about them. If you'd like to call in a score, submit a photo, dish on why Adrian Peterson is a cyborg or complain about Argo winning the Best Picture Oscar, I'll be happy to listen. (For five minutes, anyway.)
