Lunt’s recovery status encouraging

Two weeks ago Oklahoma State fans held their breath as freshman quarterback Wes Lunt fell to the turf with what was being reported as a dislocated knee cap.

Now Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy will be holding his breath for a different reason.

Lunt was expected to come out of a cast and into more of a mobile brace on Monday, opening up the possibility that he could be ready for when the Cowboys battle Texas on Saturday.

“Wes is doing really good,” Gundy said. “They have his leg in an immobilization product, like they do everybody (with that kind of injury), and that comes off today. They looked at it a few days ago and it was even better than they thought. ... I don’t think that he’ll be out there practicing on Tuesday, but we’re excited about the feedback we’re getting from the medical staff.”

Coming out of a cast is one thing, but actually being able to play is another.

“It’s just hard to say,” Gundy said. “It really is. I use Kendall Hunter as an example. Some guys, just based on the type of injury, it’s really hard to predict. But I know that when they said they were taking him out of the cast and they weren’t putting one back on, that’s a good sign. I think he’ll be out there before the end of the week.”

Gundy expects Lunt to make his return to practice Thursday. Until then, redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh will continue working with the first-team offense like did during Oklahoma State’s bye week.

“I’m going to guess that tomorrow Walsh is going to get all of (the reps with the first team) because I can’t imagine that Wes is going to practice,” Gundy said. “Based on where (Lunt) is at, if he were to come around enough to give us something most of (Lunt’s) reps would come on Thursday.”
