ADAIR - The Salina Lady Wildcats came up one game short of the area tournament Saturday, ending its’ season with a 46-42 loss to Verdigris.
The game saw the young Lady Wildcats erase a 14-point deficit, and almost pull the upset, but the Lady Cardinals closed strong and came away with the win.
After a 9-8 first quarter in favor of Salina, Verdigris pulled away with a 17-point quarter and led 25-15 going in the break.
The Lady Cardinals built their lead to 31-17 in the third, before Salina made their move. Salina went on a 21-5 run and took the lead with Kayla Morgan’s three-pointer to make it 38-36. Courtney Backward would come up with a steal then get fouled going to the bucket. She added the free throws and Salina had a four-point lead. Amanda Stout would a three-point play with a bucket and a free throw, then add a layup to take the lead back.
Backward would answer with a jumper to make it 42-41. Mallory Shaub would hit a free throw to tie it up, and Stout would hit two more free throws to give Verdigris the lead. Salina took a timeout to set up a play, but the shot came up short and Verdigris hit two more free throws to seal the game.
Whitley Gann had a monster game for the Lady Wildcats with 19 points. Reesa Cowan grabbed six rebounds.
