On a weekend traditionally defined by a rainbow of colors, green was the hue that imbued the art of watching Individual Tiger and Team Tiger at work and at play.
Followers were exposed to a dramatic ebb and flow of emotions upon the emerald sporting stages of Tulsa and Augusta, Ga.
On the green diamond that is the centerpiece of ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Team Tiger was forced to rally for a win on Friday.
With the flora of Augusta National Golf Club bursting forth in all its green lushness, Individual Tiger could not summon the strength to stage any such rally, at any time.
When walking similar competitive paths on Friday, Team Tiger and Individual Tiger were going in opposite directions.
While Individual Tiger was sending tee shots into the rough, Team Tiger was spraying singles into the outfield.
While Individual Tiger had to return on Saturday for the third round of the Masters, Team Tiger had to hit the road for a day game in Durant.
By Sunday, Individual Tiger was out of sight, out of mind as the curtain came down on the Masters, a new champion wearing a new green jacket.
At the same time, Team Tiger was still out of town, but still basking in the glow of a 6-4 Friday night victory over Collinsville.
Team Tiger was still talking about its second appearance in the Drillers High School Baseball Showcase.
The Masters was not talking about Individual Tiger and his early disappearance from the leaderboard of golf’s most majestic tournament.
The Driller Showcase, which featured 12 area teams competing in six games over three days, is played at one of the state’s two professional baseball stadiums. ONEOK Field, home of the Double A Texas League Tulsa Drillers, is in its second season.
Team Tiger has played in both Showcases in downtown Tulsa, having landed invitations from the Drillers.
“It’s a neat deal,” Team Tiger coach Gerald Osborne said Friday night.
“It’s an awesome experience for young high school kids.
“And it’s a pretty awesome experience for an old man,” he said, a smile creasing his face.
To stimulate that smile, Team Tiger had to come back from 3-1 and 4-3 deficits and score three times in the top of the seventh.
Zack Hammock and Brett Mitchell delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles in the seventh. The third run was forced in when Foster McCollough drew a one-out, bases-loaded walk.
Then it was up to reliever Nate Wolfe to close out the Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh to secure Team Tiger’s 13th win.
Playing on the Drillers’ home turf, on a Friday night, attracted a sizeable turnout of Team Tiger’s faithful.
“This is big thing for us,” said Mitchell, who led Team Tiger with three RBIs. He and Hammock collected three hits apiece.
“It’s a lot of fun. It’s a great feeling to play here in front of so many of our fans.”
Team Tiger went into the affair as the fifth-ranked team in Class 5A.
A year ago, Team Tiger was ranked third when it defeated Tulsa Kelley, 3-2, in the Showcase.
In their decision to invite Team Tiger, the Drillers apparently like the numbers of followers in the Team Tiger camp.
Whatever following Individual Tiger had for his disappointing Masters effort stayed around long after his departure to observe some spirited competition from the final three twosomes.
Like Team Tiger coming from behind, Bubba Watson came from behind to win.
Just as Team Tiger’s comeback left the Collinsville Cardinals red-faced on the ONEOK Field, Bubba Watson left the Masters’ field green with envy.
Team Tiger might have lost a game in Durant on Saturday, but there was still that lingering and lush memory of a Friday night in Tulsa.
It was quite a colorful weekend, this first full weekend of April.
