LOCUST GROVE —
The Locust Grove wrestling team placed second overall behind Blackwell Saturday in the Weatherford tournament.
The team is currently ranked sixth in class 3A tournaments.
The Pirates had eight wrestlers place in the top five and four first place.
Seniors Dakota Simerly and Mikel Baker and juniors Braden Bennett and Cub Yeager finished as champions at Weatherford.
Yeager has placed first in every tournament thus far for the Pirates.
The 126-pound Yeager is a returning state champion and earned All-American honors this summer in Fargo, N.D. Head Coach Johnny Cook is impressed with Yeager’s performances.
“He’s one of the best guys in the country, and he’s been heavily recruited,” said Cook. “Everything he gets, he’s earning. Cub isn’t a great athlete, but he’s a great competitor.”
Senior Austin Johnson and junior Trey Loveall were runner-ups at Weatherford.
Saturday’s tournament was Loveall’s first time wrestling this season due to a knee injury.
Senior Robert Williams and sophomore Dustin Remer placed fifth.
Cook said he treats tournaments as practice for regional and state tournaments.
“I really don’t care if we win or lose right now,” Cook said. “It’s not important. Everything is like a practice. The only thing that matters is at the end of the year.”
Cook believes winning a state championship is top priority in the lives of his wrestlers, citing hard work and countless hours spent preparing for the state tournament.
