Warriors rolling at tournament

The Warriors passed their first test at Adair Invitational Tournament, beating Decatur 56-40.

Adair appeared to be at a disadvantage in the paint to start from the towering size brought by Decatur’s post and power-forward.

Adair turned the the Bulldogs ‘advantage around, however, by going hard to the basket all night.

Led by senior point guard Brady Bradbury, the Warriors made their way to the stripe 28 times and shot 78 percent.

Bradbury accounted for 13 made free throws, while sophomore forward James Eastin shot 5-7 from the line.

Senior forward Jordan Fleming set the defensive tone sacrificing his body in the first quarter, when he stepped in to take a hard charge from one of Decatur’s big men.

A tied game at the end of the first quarter was short-lived.

Four Adair players contributed points in a 14-0 run to start the second quarter, and the team held the Bulldogs to eight.

An 11-point Warriors lead was cut to six in the third period, but a swarming Adair defense scored off enough forced turnovers for a 13-point lead at the end of three.

Bradbury found his way to the line six times in the fourth and scored a career-high 33 points.

Fleming had 15 points.

Head Coach Travis Cannady said Dewey is one of the bigger, more athletic teams his squad will face all year.

“Our strategy was  to take it to the rim, get them in foul trouble and get to the line,” Cannady said. “The real key was our free throw shooting.”

Adair takes on Chouteau Friday at 9 p.m.

“This game will be a battle,” said Cannady. “It has been over the past few years. Coach Wheeler does a great job of getting his players ready and I expect nothing but their best.”

Both teams are undefeated heading in to the game.

Girls

The Lady Warriors blew out Decatur in the first round of the Adair invitational tournament, 75-14.

Tenacious full court defense from Adair resulted in complete domination in the first half.

Head Coach Scott Winfield’s decision to put his bench players in halfway through the first quarter offered the Lady Bulldogs no relief.

The home team led 37-2 at the break.

Adair sophomore guard Madi Wengerd put on a shooting clinic, draining five three-pointers to lead scoring with 15 points.

Junior forward Bailey Stephens followed with 12 points, and junior forward Molly Kerr and senior post Anna Crawford each had 10.

“The only benefit of a game like that is the amount of playing time our bench gets,” Winfield said.

The Lady Warriors advance to face Jay Friday at 7:30 p.m.
