ADAIR —
A one-point loss to perennial powerhouse Davis, ended Adair’s 2A playoff run Friday, 34-33.
The Wolves, heavily-favored by most, had their hands full at Gene Winfield Stadium right out of the gate.
Senior quarterback Brady Bradbury and running back Zak Woolman put together a 77-yard drive to the Davis goal line before a touchdown pass to sophomore James Eastin with 7:25 on the clock.
A fumble recovery by sophomore linebacker Hunter Rosebrough on the Wolves first possession had a packed house of fans in jubilation.
Bradbury hit Woolman up the right side two plays later for a 64-yard touchdown.
Davis senior halfback Michael Nowden answered with a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Adair freshman defensive back Tayler Conseen intercepted a rare pass attemt from Davis senior quarterback Alec Hetherington early in the second quarter.
With 39 seconds to play before the break, Hetherington found sophomore running back Blake Summers in the end zone from 17 yards out.
The Warriors had 160 passing yards and 122 rushing after two quarters.
The Wolves accumulated 31 passing yards and 85 rushing.
Davis senior running back Deaundre Carr returned the third quarter opening kickoff 64 yards to give the Wolves their first lead of the game.
A two-point conversion run by Nowden was a visitor exclamation point.
By the end of the third, the Warriors reached Davis’ goal line three times but were unable to convert.
The Wolves held their one-touchdown lead heading into the fourth.
On an Adair fourth down and eleven, Bradbury released a 27-yard touchdown pass from the pocket to senior wide receiver Daniel Gonzalez, who split two Davis defenders for the grab.
Sophomore Junior Rosebrough’s extra point tied the game.
The Bradbury-Woolman duo, a season-long recipe for success, struck again in four plays that resulted in a 27-yard touchdown pass to the senior running back.
But Carr struck back for the Wolves two plays later with a 54-yard touchdown run, followed by his two-point conversion run that put the visitors back on top.
Nowden widened their lead on a touchdown run with 3:15 left on the clock.
Bradbury led the last drive of his high school career in fierce fashion.
The 11-play, 63-yard drive included a 37-yard pass to Gonzalez.
The rest of the yardage came from a Bradbury ground-assault. He found the end zone with 25 seconds remaining.
Trailing by one, Adair went for the win but fell short by inches on a quarterback sneak.
After the loss, Adair Head Coach Mark Lippe addressed his 2012 team with gratitude.
“This group has absolutely moved our football program forward,” Lippe told them. “You have changed everything we do at this school, in this program and in this community. You should have your heads held high. Tonight you went to war. And I am proud of you all.”
