Tigers can’t figure Howe

CLAREMORE — The Class 5A baseball regional format was altered, but it did not affect the second-ranked Claremore Zebras Thursday.

Sophomore Bryce Howe mowed down the Pryor Tigers, striking out 11 en route to an 8-2 victory at Legion Field.

That game came after Howe hit a seventh-inning grand slam to eliminate Collinsville, 4-0.

On Monday, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association released pairings for the three-team regional. Between that time and Thursday’s opening round of the double-elimination tournament, the OSSAA changed the pairings.

After Pryor opened with a 9-4 win over Collinsville, the Tigers were scheduled to move right on to Claremore. In the new scheduling, Collinsville followed its Pryor game with the Claremore matchup.

The Collinsville-Claremore game proved to be a dandy. It also gave Howe an explosive start into his second game

If the walk-off home run was not enough, Howe was the story again against the Tigers,  scattering five hits and giving up single runs in the first two innings.

He had to share the offensive spotlight with J.P. Seifried and Brenton Washausen. Seifried had two doubles in his three hits and drove in two runs. Washausen also had a pair of hits and belted a triple.

The Zebras, who defeated Pryor, 10-8, in their only regular-season meeting, registered 11 hits against Zack Hammock and Kelvin Grubbs. Among those hits were three doubles and a triple.

The Tigers scored in each of the first two innings.

Brett Mitchell doubled in the first inning and scored on two wild pitches.

In the second, Nate Wolfe doubled, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Justin Thomas.

Then from that point, Howe was in control.
