SALINA — Salina’s sixth-ranked Wildcats rode their pitching to a pair of victories Thursday on the first day of a Class 3A high school baseball regional tournament on their home turf.
Jake Tolbert, Brett Kerns and Brent Soldier combined on a one-hitter in the Wildcats’ first game and they downed Nowata, 4-1.
In their second game, the Wildcats let Jake Johnson have his turn and he stopped 12th-ranked Caney Valley, 2-1.
The wins pushed Salina into a Friday night championship game.
Against Nowata, Tolbert worked the first four innings, striking out six before he retired with a 3-0 lead.
Kerns and Soldier followed. Kerns contributed an RBI single in the Wildcats’ two-run fourth.
Johnson could thank Kerns for the runs that knocked off Caney Valley.
The Trojans had lost only once during the season, which had opened with 19 consecutive victories.
They scored in the first against Johnson but that would be the end of it.
Kerns delivered a two-run single in the fifth and that was all Johnson needed. He struck out three while limiting the Trojans to five hits.
The Wildcats extended their winning streak to eight.
