CLAREMORE — The final score resembled that of a football game.
The participants made it more closely resemble a track meet.
But what it was was the last baseball game of the high school season for the Claremore Tigers.
Scoring in bunches, the Claremore Zebras walloped the Tigers, 18-6, Friday to win the Class 5A regional championship and advance to the state tournament.
Five pitchers could not slow the Zebras, who banged out 15 hits. The Tigers hurlers contributed five walks and they hit three batters.
But it was the Tigers’ defense that struggled more than the pitchers. Six errors led to 13 unearned runs.
The Zebras rang up seven doubles and a triple. Leadoff batter J.P. Seifried was 4-for-6 and drove in four runs with two doubles and the triple.
The Zebras served notice with four runs in the first, then bunched up four more in the fourth before the Tigers could scratch.
Pryor put together a six-run fourth to make things interesting. However, the Zebras took those runs back with six of their own in the sixth and added four more in the seventh.
It was the Zebras’ second win over Pryor in this regional played on their home turf. It also was the Zebras’ third win of the season over the Tigers, who finished at 21-15.
Claremore, ranked second in Class 5A, will take a 30-4 record into the state tournament this week.
