— TAHLEQUAH — All the news about Randy Gipson becoming the new women’s basketball coach at Northwest Missouri State, forget it ever happened.

After being penciled in as Gene Steinmeyer’s successor in Maryville, Mo., Gipson had a change of course Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Gipson, instead, announced later Tuesday that he would be staying at Northeastern State, where he’s already the winningest coach in women’s basketball history.

“We decided the connections were too deep, and we didn’t want to lose that,” Gipson said, alluding to a conversation with his wife, Pam, Monday night. “Sometimes, you have to be on the brink of something before you realize what you have.”

Northwest Missouri State was slated to introduce Gipson as its sixth coach in school history on Thursday at a 10 a.m. press conference. But the Bearcat athletic department will re-engage in a coaching search that commenced after a recently concluded 6-22 season.

“We are disappointed that coach Gipson will not be serving as the head coach of our women’s basketball program but respect his decision to stay at Northeastern State,” said Wren Baker, Northwest Missouri State’s athletic director, in a press release.

After confirming that Gipson was staying for his 14th season at Jack Dobbins Field House, NSU director of athletics Tony Duckworth said: “The University and the department of athletics, including myself, we’re excited that Randy Gipson is going to remain our women’s basketball coach. I’m looking forward to continue working with him in making the women’s program the best that it can possibly be.”
