Rogers State has qualified for its second trip to the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship.
The Hillcats (20-11) will open the 32-team tournament against Cumberlands (Ky.) (28-3) at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday in the Frankfort (Ky.) Convention Center.
RSU is led in scoring by junior guard Leah Smith of Kansas City (12.5 points). Senior post Gianna Woods of Compton, Calif., is averaging 11.6 points and 8.8 rebounds.
Coach Amy Williams, who has guided the Hillcats since the program’s inception five seasons ago, has eight Oklahoma products on her 13-player roster.
RSU will be joined in the six-day tournament by three other members of the Sooner Athletic Conference.
SAC champion Oklahoma City is the top-seeded team in the tournament and is seeking its sixth national championship. Also in the field are Lubbock Christian and Southern Nazarene.
The first two days of the tournament will feature eight games each, with another eight games scheduled for Friday’s second round. The championship is scheduled Tuesday, March 20.
