LOCUST GROVE —
The Locust Grove wrestling team pulverized Inola Thursday night 64-18 to improve to 2-0 in duals.
A memorable meeting for the Pirates, the dual was the only home engagement of the season.
Locust’s only losses came from forfeits in the 170, 182 and 220 pound weight classes.
The team is currently without six wrestlers, but it seems it has not lost a step.
Locust Grove had seven wrestlers pin their opponents in the first period.
Returning state champion Cub Yeager, from the 132-pound weight class, had no problem with his opponent, pinning him seconds into the match.
One hundred-thirteen-pound and 126 pounders, Braden Bennett and Austin Johnson pinned their opponents quickly in the first period.
Freshman 145-pounder Alex Hix pinned his man in the third period after coming from behind in the first.
One hundred-sixty-pound pound junior Isiah Woolman had a close match. He pinned his man just moments away from being pinned himself.
Senior Dakota Simmerly won 8-3 in the 138-pound matchup.
Freshman Nester Jimenez and sophomore Jacob Niederbuhl each won by forfeit.
Head coach Johnny Cook, a 23-year coaching veteran for Locust Grove, said the results couldn’t be better.
Cook has had his team ranked in the top 10 for the past two decades. He has won two state titles.
“Our plan is the same every year, to win a state title,” Cook said. The Pirates’ next dual will be at Stilwell, Dec. 4.
