Oklahoma’s practice usually ends around 5:30 p.m. As for quarterback Landry Jones and his receivers, they’ve been going a little later.
The group has been staying late to work on routes. The main recipients have been senior Justin Brown and freshman Trey Metoyer.
Brown, who has six catches for 87 yards in the first two games, wanted the extra work because he felt he was behind after transferring in from Penn State after preseason camp had already started.
“I only had about two weeks here. It’s not like I’ve been here for three years or even the summer. I had to get the timing down real quick,” he said.
For Metoyer, it’s to build a better understanding of the offense.
“It’s just been more of how to run the route and where to run the route,” Jones said. “We’re going over plays, going over what he’s thinking, and then going over how to run a route against different techniques, then just talking through different things about what I’m seeing and what I’m expecting from him to get into that open area.”
No scout team for Bell: Oklahoma came up with its Belldozer package after studying to play Kansas State. The short-yardage offense that No. 2 quarterback Blake Bell runs has a lot of similarities to what Kansas State uses with starting quarterback Collin Klein on most snaps.
“Kansas State’s offense has a lot of similarities to the Belldozer, the power and the counter, you’re going to see that over and over from K-State’s QB. They just formation it differently,” defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “Those are big plays when you play K-State. You have to stop the QB power and counter.”
But OU’s defense won’t get to bang away at Bell in preparation for the Wildcats. Bell is off-limits when it comes to hitting in practice.
Kansas State tickets available: The Oklahoma athletics department announced on Tuesday that it has received a limited number of returned tickets from Kansas State for the Sooners’ Sept. 22 game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:50 p.m. at Owen Field.
OU boasts a school-record streak of 81 consecutive sellouts. That streak encompasses every home contest of the Bob Stoops era dating back to 1999.
