Jones faces decision: Sooners or the NFL

NORMAN — Oklahoma’s season is over.

Quarterback Landry Jones now has the time to clear his mind and decide whether he wants to return for his senior season or enter the 2012 NFL draft.

It may be the biggest subplot of the Sooner offseason and it won’t be long before a decision must be made.

There’s no doubt having a senior quarterback who’s made 38 career starts bolsters the Sooner offense. Yet Sooner coach Bob Stoops won’t try to sway Jones in either direction.

“I just want them to have accurate information,” he said, speaking of any underclassmen considering the draft. “You do with it what you and your parents want to. This is the accurate information. This isn’t what your agent is telling you and it’s not what someone on TV said.

“Here’s your draft projection. Here’s what four or five guys that will actually be in those draft rooms (said) and this is the grade their people have given you. Now you have a decent idea of what they’re thinking.”

Many believe Jones has the talent to be taken in the first round. He’s thrown for over 12,000 yards and 93 touchdowns over the last three seasons.

But there’s already a talented group of quarterbacks that will be available in April. Stanford’s Andrew Luck, Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden are already in the mix. USC quarterback Matt Barkley has announced he will return next season

Jones, however, isn’t interested in who the quarterback competition will be. One of the overriding factors is what OU has coming back.

“I think you have to look it from a realistic perspective as far as you as a player and you as a team. I think you have to look at, ‘Well, can we go win a national championship?’” he said. “That’s what’s nice about this place, is year in and year out, you’re always in the mix of being able to go to that game. As far as individual awards, as far as being an All-American, things along those lines; I think that might factor into a decision.”

Another run at a national championship was major factor in the decision-making process when former OU quarterback Sam Bradford returned to school in 2009 after winning the Heisman Trophy. Injuries — including a season-ending shoulder injury to Bradford — ended any chance of that happening.

A deeper look back at 2009 should have given Bradford pause. The 2009 season was one of rebuilding on the offensive line and at the receiver positions.

Jones will have to think about that, too.

The Sooners will be rebuilding at receiver. Anyone who doesn’t think losing Ryan Broyles is going to be a big deal should take a hard look at OU’s last four games this season.

Jones’ passing numbers dropped dramatically. There’s nobody coming back who has even approached proving he can bring what Broyles brought to the Sooner table.

“Guys like Ryan don’t come around a lot. He’s a very talented and smart football player. He uses his body well and has great hands, very explosive. When you’ve got a guy like that, you try to get the ball to him as much as possible,” Jones said. “In tight coverage, he can really make plays. You trust a guy like that.

“We have some guys coming up that are capable of doing that, they’re just a little young right now.”

The Sooners are expected to have Kenny Stills, Jaz Reynolds, Trey Franks and Kameel Jackson next season. According to Rivals.com, OU has two of the top 10 prep receivers — Heritage Hall’s Sterling Shepard and St. Louis DeSmet High School’s Durron Neal — committed to signing with OU.
