Shinn at 3 p.m.: Sooners could have been sharper, Stoops say

NORMAN — Oklahoma survived a close call in Saturday's 24-7 victory at UTEP.

OU did't take the lead until the third quarter and didn't really put the game away until the final minutes.

Sooner coach Bob Stoops said it wasn't overconfidence that led to the problems at UTEP.

"Every time someone has a close game people say they overlooked them. That's not the case at all," he said on Monday. "Sometimes you're just not as sharp as you need to be." That being said, the Sooners were one of only three teams ranked in the preseason Top 25 to play true road games in the opening week.

It managed to get back home at 1-0.

"In the end, we didn't get anybody hurt whatsoever. We didn't execute as well as we'd like, but everybody kept their cool in the locker room, everyone was positive and came out in the second half and played better. I think there are things we can take from it.

"We've got a lot we need to correct this week, but sometimes in those situations you see that. Maybe if we played somebody down in a different division or a 1-AA team, maybe that doesn't show up. You have to progress through the year. That's what we're after."
