Obituary- Wanda Hollis

Wanda Gene (Hughes) Hollis, 82, of Pryor, died Saturday, in Claremore. She was born on December 18, 1929 in Stilwell, the daughter of George Hughes and Effie Mae (Franklin) Hughes. She married James Wilbur Hollis on August 19, 1946 in Columbus, Kan. at a Baptist minister’s home.  Hollis worked for the Pryor Junior High School as a secretary for over 24 years. She was always very active. She was a member of Pryor bowling leagues for over 50 years, an accomplished seamstress, and an avid fisherman.  A member of the First Baptist Church of Pryor, she was active in church activities, including being the director of funeral dinners for many years. Hollis was a giving person, donating over 57 pints of blood to the American Red Cross, and also gave her time to countless other causes.  She kept her mind sharp, playing Scrabble and completing crossword puzzles. She was an excellent typist and a proofreader extraordinaire.  She was overly proud of her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. To each of them she often said, “I’ve always been your biggest fan.”  Wanda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who leaves an example to all of a life well lived.

Hollis is survived by her husband, James Wilbur Hollis of Claremore; daughters, Sharol Batson and husband, Jim Batson of Tulsa, and Kellye Hollis of Dallas, Texas; her sister Gretchen Flood of Pryor; three grandchildren, Jayme and Chris Brassell, Brett and Kim Batson, Lindsey and Pat Green; six great grandchildren, Griffin, Macy and Murphy Brassell, Isley and Fennin Batson and Teddy Green; many other relatives and dear friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Effie Hughes; her son, James “Jimmy” Hollis; her brothers, E. Thomas Hughes and Jim Hughes; her sisters, Savola Swanson and Mildred Coleman.

A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday,  (her 83rd Birthday) at 2 p.m. in the Shipman’s Funeral Chapel with Dr. Mike Cox officiating. Interment will follow in the Graham Memorial Cemetery with Brett Batson, Chris Brassell, Patrick Green, Jerry Hill, Mark Hughes, Rick Coleman, Tom Flood and Griffin Brassell serving as casket bearers.  Honorary casket bearers are Jim Batson, Bill Flood and James Hughes.  The family will receive friends and family at the funeral home from 6 p.m until 8 p.m. on Monday evening.  To leave a personal message to her family, please visit her web memorial at www.shipmansfuneralhome.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Shipman’s Funeral & Cremation Service.
