Obituary: Marvin "Jerry" Monk

PRYOR — Marvin "Jerry" Monk was born Aug. 5, 1939, in Rose, to Andy and Rettie (Gore) Monk. He died Thursday, in Ft. Smith, Ark., at the age of 72 years, 11 months, and 28 days.

Monk grew up in the Rose area and had attended school at Smith Chapel near there. On Nov. 3, 1958, in Pryor, he and Vivian Williams were united in marriage. The couple lived in Rose for several years before making Locust Grove their home for the past 39 years. Monk was a worker that hung sheetrock and drywall for many years.

Monk had attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Pryor. He enjoyed the outdoors and enjoyed going fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed traveling to the mountains of Colorado. Monk enjoyed working on old cars and enjoyed to ride 4-wheelers. He enjoyed time spent walking with his wife.

Monk is survived by: His wife of over 53 years, Vivian, of the home; two children, Debbie Downing and husband Steve of Locust Grove, and Daniel Monk and wife Regena of Tahlequah; four grandchildren, Angie Downing of Locust Grove, April Snyder and husband Anthony of Quanah, Texas, Ashley Henson and husband C.J. of Tahlequah, and Shelby Swift and husband Cody of Tahlequah; two great grandchildren, Avery Snyder and Teagan Henson; Numerous nieces and nephews including, Jim Monk and his wife Bea of Locust Grove; Numeorus cousins including, Raymond "Curly" Ward and wife Gloria of Locust Grove; other relatives and a host of friends.

Monk was preceded in death by: his parents; six brothers, Carl Monk, Earl Monk, Calvin Monk, Ira Monk, Jack Monk, and Carman Monk; and one sister, Azell Ward.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Locust Grove Funeral Home Chapel. Don Brown will officiate with interment following at the Elm Grove Cemetery near Rose,.
