A day of golf, a day of remembrance

It was a Memorial Day to remember.

Going beyond the traditional and somber observances of the day, Monday saw the arrival of big-league golfing talent in Owasso.

PGA Tour players joined with Nashville stars and pro football players paired up with Hollywood celebrities for the third annual Patriot Cup pro-am golf event at the Patriot Golf Club.

Vince Gill headed up the Nashville contingent, joined by the three members of Rascal Flatts.

Brandon Weeden, the former Oklahoma State quarterback now trying to take a starring turn with the Cleveland Browns, carried the NFL banner.

There was Craig T. Nelson, the popular and venerable actor known for his television credits.

Some two dozen golfers from the PGA Tour and the Champions Senior Tour were on hand to the delight of some 4,500 spectators.

The Patriot Golf Club is a spectacular piece of golfing real estate, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and carved out of the jagged limestone walls of western Rogers County near the entrance to the Port of Catoosa.

Opened in 2010, it stretches 7,112 yards, playing to par 72, through limestone canyons and lowland marsh, heavy woodlands and high prairie.

Five players who have won major golf championships were in the field — Bob Tway (1986 PGA), Craig Stadler (1982 Masters), Tom Lehman (1996 British Open), Corey Pavin (1995 U.S. Open) and Todd Hamilton (2004 British Open).

Oklahoma State produced two of the most popular competitors — Weeden and Rickie Fowler, the former Cowboy who is sixth on the PGA Tour money list.

The Patriot Golf Club’s goal is to host a pro tour event on a regular basis. Considerable talk on Monday centered around a possible Champions Senior Tour event as early as next year.

Linking the golf club with the Folds of Honor Foundation, Monday’s pro-am is destined to grow and mature. The Folds of Honor Foundation helps fund college scholarships for families of U.S. military personnel killed or injured in service. More than 2,600 scholarships have been presented.
