The Town of Salina Board of Trustees approved raises for two city employees following an executive session at their meeting Tuesday night.
The job performance review for part-time paid Reserve Officer Wesley Reed after one year of employment resulted in the approval of the
standard 25 cents per hour raise.
Also reviewed was the job performance of Library Director Lou Ella Martin after one year of employment. She was also given the standard
25 cents per hour raise.
During the executive session, trustees reviewed job performances of all employees of the Police Department. No action was taken.
Trustees approved the purchase of 15 tons of cold lay asphalt for $1,600, to be used for pot hole repair.
Utility Superintendent Randall Coon was asked when the asphalt would arrive.
“We’re execting delivery the first of next week,” Coon said. “We’re going to hit the bad spots first ...which is all over.”
In other business, Gail Fox addressed the board with an update on the cleanup of the gazebo at the city park in time for the Easter Egg Hunt on April 3.
Volunteers have been working on the repair and painting of the structure.
“We’ve been cleaning and scraping paint and there is much more to it than we had planned,” Fox said, adding that there are some repairs that should be made before painting can be completed.
“We don’t just want to cover up the problems with paint,” she said. “If we’re going to do it, then we ought to fix it right.”
Mayor Darrell Blaylock agreed. “Why don’t you do some checking and get us a price on what is needed,” he said. If there are volunteers in place to help with the project, maybe the city can help with the supplies needed to make the changes, he said.
Also on the agenda was a request for a donation to the Salina area Chamber of Commerce for the Easter Egg Hunt.
“I don’t think we can do that,” Blaylock said. “We can’t give city money ... taxpayer money for things like that.”
City Attorney Bill Gaddis confirmed that is the case.
“Yeah, they closed that loophole a few years ago,” he said good-naturedly.
Fox commented that the town’s willingness to help with the gazebo repairs is donation enough for the event.
