Beware of phone scam

The Mayes County Sheriff’s Office has been notified of a phone scam.

A phone number, from Boston, Mass., is calling local citizens claiming to be a civil investigator from “Process Server Corporation,” calling to demand payment. The caller then says that if the recipient does not make a payment, he or she must contact legal representation within

24 hours.

There are upwards of 50 entries about this scam on the website www.callercenter.com, which the sheriff’s office encourages people to use to investigate suspicious phone calls.

People from several states documented receiving the same phone calls and voice messages telling them they owe money on a pending legal matter.

Upon calling the number back, they were greeted with an automated system providing them with a series of prompts. One of the prompts is in regard to a message left about a pending legal matter.

There are multiple prompts that require payment. There is no customer service option and every extension is met with the same recording, “Your call cannot be completed at this time. Please call back later.”

Any attempt by the caller to remove themselves from the Process Server Corporation calling list is immediately disconnected.

The sheriff’s office warns people not to make payments over the phone, saying a person would be notified with court documents in the mail if they were involved in any civil suit.
