County buys fire trucks, semi

Mayes County Commissioners awarded bids on two fire trucks and a semi truck.

District 1 is buying a day cab semi to haul equipment and pull a trailer that hauls asphalt. Commissioner Alva Martin of District 1 requested commissioners accept the low bid from D&D; Truck Sales.

D&D; offered a bid of $20,900 for a 2001 model with 382,763 miles. Martin said that is low mileage for a semi, which can run up to one million miles.

Commissioners approved bids on a tanker and a pumper for the Osage-Pleasant View Fire Department

Greg McKinney of Osage Fire Department asked commissioners to award the bid on the pumper to Emergency Vehicle Services.

“Their specs met ours to a tee,” McKinney said. The company bid $45,000 for a 1990 pumper. The bid includes a trade-in for an older truck the department needs to surplus.

Martin said the county could not accept the bid from Emergency Vehicle because the fire department did not seek bids on a trade-in. The second bid on the pumper was from Adair Fire Department, for a 1992 pumper for $45,000.

Martin said the Adair truck is two years newer and has a new engine. Martin added that the City of Adair would not charge interest on the purchase if the balance was paid in installments.

McKinney agreed to buying the pumper from Adair, and the commissioners approved. Commissioners approved a 1997 tanker for $84,000 from Emergency Vehicles Services, which is out of Claremore.

County resident Earlene Wassom brought a complaint to the commissioners on a partial road that she said is blocked.

Wassom owns property on North 4405 Road, which is runs into Lake Hudson. Wassom said an adjoining landowner has the road blocked.

Chairman Melvin Pritchett said the road was built years before the lake was put in. Lake Hudson was formed during the 1960s, covering all but a small section of the road. Pritchett said the road has not been in the county system since before he was in office. He has been commissioner nearly 20 years.

County employees will receive $100 safety awards for Christmas this year. Mayes County Sheriff Frank Cantey said he plans to give his part time employees $50 each.

District 3 received a $50,000 Rural Economic Action Plan grant for a new equipment shed. District 2 received $15,525.41 from county funds.

The commissioners approved a few minor updates to the five-year plan for county bridge projects.

Martin said he plans to use county bridge and road improvement funding to replace a small bridge south of Country Fever Road. Martin said the estimated cost would be $400,000 if the district went through a contractor. Martin said he thinks the county can replace the bridge for $75,000. Martin expects to work on the project in late 2010 or 2011.
