Dawson’s 3-pointer lifts LG to win over Pryor

PRYOR - Locust Grove’s Darrien Dawson picked a good time to make his only field goal of the game Friday against Pryor.

With 30 seconds left and the game tied, Dawson got a wide open look from the corner and let it fly.

“He can take that shot any time he’s got it,” said Locust Grove Head Coach Ronnie Maple. “He’s good enough to be a starter, but I love the spark he gives us off the bench.”

The shot got nothing but net, and gave Locust Grove a 67-64 lead over Pryor. The Pirates would make enough free throws to keep the lead and won 69-66.

“I’m happy with the win. Pryor is a tough place to play. The fans and students really get into it,” said Maple.

The game looked like it wasn’t even going to be close early. The Pirates came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter and sprinted out to a 22-8 lead. The Tigers had no answer for Pud Ross who had 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just the first quarter.

But Ross got into foul trouble and Pryor Head Coach Greg Arnold decided to up the pressure on the Pirates. It worked as Pryor turned the once big lead for the Pirates into a small one. Pryor scored 25 points in the second quarter and cut the lead to 38-33 by the half.

It continued in the second half as Ross picked up his third and fourth fouls. Ross’ backup, Kevin Pilant, also had four fouls. Pryor took advantage and grabbed the lead. Jordan Madole hit a three-pointer to tie it up at 46-46, and Parker Ballard gave Pryor the lead at 48-46 with a runner. At the end of the third, Pryor led 50-48.

Ross came back out in the fourth and Locust Grove was able to build their lead back up to eight points. However, he let his emotions get the best of him and was called for a technical foul, which fouled him out of the game. Pryor, once again, was able to battle back with Ross on the bench.

A Ballard layup cut it to 63-59, and Madole came up with another big shot to close it 63-62. Locust Grove’s Trey Conner got one of two from the line to give the Pirates a two-point lead, but Pryor’s Brady Jarboe hit a turnaround at the other end that tied it up. That left it up to Dawson who connected on the three and put the game in the Pirates’ hands.

Despite only playing sparingly after the first quarter, Ross led the Pirates with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Ross continually got second chance

opportunities and made the most of them. Adrian Houser added 17 and nine rebounds and C.J. Stafford had 12 points. Justin Bailey came off the bench and didn’t fill up the stat sheet but got two big buckets and several rebounds at key times. He had four points and six rebounds.

For Pryor, Madole was hot from outside the arc and had 20 points. Ballard had 15 and Jarboe finished with 14. Both Madole and Ballard had five rebounds apiece.
