Area firefighters complete training
Eighteen Mayes County firefighters recently passed a course in Firefighter One training.
Newly certified are Mike Dunham, Kirk Kvittum, David Suggs, Thomas Barker, Billy Wishard, J.D. Gilbo, Doug Stone, Alan Davis, Bret Hollingsworth, Trey Larremore, Nick Cummins, Chris Peters, Chris Young, Blake Peper, Adam Wolf, Aaron Doughtey, Cory Packard and Brad Dyer.
The instructor for the class was Pryor Firefighter Brandon Merritt, who is a trainer with the Oklahoma State University fire service training program. Helping with the training were trainers Captain Don Hess and Mike Mann. Also assisting were Randy Gibbs, Kenny Young, John Ballew and Tim Bonea of the Pryor Fire Department.
The course was eight weeks long, beginning in August and ending Oct. 18. The course is 136 hours and was two nights a week, Saturdays and Sundays.
One firefighter has yet to take his written test because of scheduling
conflicts.
Pryor Fire Chief Tim Thompson said the course is the standard for professional firefighter qualifications through National Fire Protection Association. The course is NFPA 1001.
Thompson said it is difficult to fit the course into one’s schedule. Volunteer firefighters have other jobs they have to work around.
“Mayes County is fortunate to have such dedicated people,” Thompson said.
