Poker run for Angel Tree at Locust Grove

Melissa McClendon

A date for the Angel Tree Poker Run has been set and organizers are gearing up for the event that will benefit the Locust Grove First United Methodist Church Angel Tree Project. The Angel Tree Poker run will be Saturday, Nov. 7, from noon to 6 p.m.

Organizers Kendall Morrison and Heather Crowell are taking entries for the 10- stop run.

“This the first year we’ve done it for the Angel Tree. The last one was done for the food pantry,” said Crowell.

The idea for a poker run came last year when the friends decided they wanted to do something for the town.

“There just wasn’t much going on,” Crowell said.

Morrison said they decided to host a car show in July. From there, the car show turned into a poker run.

This year the event moves to the fall and organizers are much more prepared. The run will begin at the FUMC on Highway 82. Classic cars, trucks and motorcycles will travel from Locust Grove to Salina, Pryor, Chouteau and back to Woodland Junction just east of Locust Grove.

A volunteer manned poker run stop will be at each location. There the contestant will draw a card from the dealer. The card is then recorded onto a form that is taken to each stop. Once a contestant has visited each of the 10 stops, in any order, they will return to the church.

Awards will be given to the best hand, worst hand, fastest time and slowest time. While contestants wait for everyone to return they will be treated to music from the Matt Thompson band and a small concession. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.

Although the run is for classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, anyone with any type of vehicle interested in raising money for the Angel Tree can enter. Cost of entry is $12 by Nov. 1 and $15 the day of registration. Rules

will be handed out during

registration.

Registration will be from noon to 2 p.m., in the Methodist Church parking lot in Locust Grove.

All of the money raised will go to the Angel Tree Project. The United Methodist Women’s’ group will use the money to make sure that every child on the Angel Tree receives a gift. Sometimes that requires the UMW to purchase gifts for the angels still remaining on the tree.
