Craig County’s recent cattle thieves were rounded up over the weekend, after investigators located the 32 head.
The cattle were stolen two months ago from Justin McClain. Craig County Sheriff Jimmy Sooter said the cattle
likely wandered off McClain’s property through a water gap and onto Ryan Jones’ family property.
“He just decided to pull them up and sell them, with the help of three other guys,” said Sooter.
Investigators found the cattle in the Joplin Stockyard and at a feedlot in Dodge City, Kan.
Since the cattle were not in good shape, Sooter said McClain decided to be reimbursed for the cost of the cattle in the form of eventual restitution.
Sooter said if cattle aren’t fed
properly, they can lose weight, devaluing the animals greatly.
McClain would be entitled to restitution for the animals if the four men thought to be responsible are convicted.
Ryan Charles Jones, 22, Vinita, who is thought to be the ring leader, turned himself in to the sheriff’s office last Friday. He was released the same day on a $30,000 property bond. The other three, Wesley Ryan Schrick, 22, Vinita, Darnell Hooks, 43, Vinita, and Kendrick Charles Jones, 21, Vinita, were arrested after Jones turned himself in. Each
posted a $30,000 bond to be released.
All four face charges of larceny of domestic animals, a felony.
