Chouteau considers dog fostering in city

Chouteau trustees are considering changing an ordinance to allow dog fostering inside the town.

Mayor Jerry Floyd said Judy Harris would like to foster dogs from the animal shelter, but the three dog limit would have to be changed.

Floyd said the board took no action, but will consider an ordinance changing the number of dogs allowed per residence in Chouteau.

In other business:

• The police department issued 267 citations, wrote 64 warnings and gave 87 verbal warnings in April. The department made 418 total contacts and took 115 police calls. Officers made one drug arrest and jailed 20 people. Reserve officers worked 73.5 hours. Officers took 12 animal calls, picking up nine.

• The police department worked three vehicle crashes and received three handheld radar units with Cherokee Nation money. Officers made one driving under the influence arrest, two felony warrant arrests, one DUI drugs arrest, one possession of marijuana, one public intoxication and one runaway juvenile.

• Cases worked by the police department in April were for burglary, assault and battery, death, theft from motor vehicle, bogus check, aiding and abetting, violation of protective order, domestic violence, obtaining merchandise by false pretense and disorderly conduct.

• The board tabled approving a lease agreement with the board of Mayes County Commissioners until the district attorney and Chouteau’s attorney make final changes to the agreement. District 2 is looking to lease land for their district headquarters.

• The board approved a sales tax transfer to the Public Works Authority for $30,500, to legal services other outlays for $1,600 and moving $11,000 from materials and supplies in the police department budget to other outlays.

• The board approved closing town hall for Cherry Dry to attend the Oklahoma Municipal League Workshop on

June 18-19, in Tulsa. The cost is $125 plus meals and mileage.

• Mike Kennedy was approved to spray the town for mosquitoes at a monthly charge of $1,200.

• Pastor Tom Landsaw from the First Baptist Church was approved as the Police Department Chaplain.

• Assistant Police Chief Lynn Hershberger was approved to attend a narcotics conference in July in Tennessee. The cost is $100, plus hotel cost of $403 and meals and mileage.

• James Cox, Doug Stone and David Suggs were approved as volunteer firefighters for the town, bringing the total number of volunteer firefighters to 18.

• The board approved replacing a set of bunker gear for $1,333.25 plus shipping.
