Mayes County Commissioners reported numerous road and culvert washouts in the aftermath of Friday’s flooding.
District 3 suffered the worst damage, losing a new box culvert crossing and some low water slabs.
Commissioner Melvin Pritchett said the new box culvert over Little Saline Creek east of Salina became clogged with debris. Unable to flow through, the rushing water cut a new 40-foot path around the culvert.
District 3 Secretary Melinda Ward said the Little Saline Creek channel is now twice normal size. The box culvert covers only a portion of the waterway.
Ward said low water slabs on 505 Trail Road and 443.8 were washed away. A large pipe which Ward called a “bridge-like structure” was washed away on 492.5 Road.
Rushing water completely washed out County Line Road East 570 down to large rocks. District 3 county workers have been trying to get the road repaired for several days.
In District 2, two-thirds of a section on Cavalier Road is washed out west of Twin Bridges.
Commissioner Darrell Yoder said numerous culverts washed into residential driveways. On 427 Road between roads 510 and 520, asphalt washed off a bridge and uncovered a culvert.
Yoder said asphalt washed out at other locations such as Deer Creek and South Elliott.
District 1 Commissioner Alva Martin said he has closed 430 Road south off Highway 28. Pryor Creek ran under the road and washed it out.
Martin said gravel was lost off several roads.
South of Chelsea on 360 Road, the top of a small bridge washed off. A bridge top washed out on 433 Road west of Adair, one mile north of Highway 69. County workers have replaced the tops on both structures.
