Murder suspect fights deputies

Sommer Woodward

A murder suspect from Hughes County put up a fight after kicking out the window of the patrol vehicle transporting him to Vinita through Pryor Monday.

The suspect’s name isn’t being released because he was being transported for mental evaluation at Eastern State Hospital in Vinita.

Mayes County Undersheriff Joe Garrett said the suspect kicked out the back window of the patrol car near Roberts Auto Center.

Two Hughes County deputies attempted to restrain the suspect, who began fighting the deputies.

Employees at Roberts Auto saw the altercation and called for help.

Four Mayes County deputies arrived and helped restrain the suspect. Other law enforcement who assisted were Pryor Police and Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The suspect was put in a chair restraint in the jail van from the sheriff’s office and taken to the hospital. He was sedated and treated for any injuries before Mayes County deputies transported him to Vinita.

The two deputies from Hughes County stayed behind in the hospital. One was bitten on one of his hands and the other had wrist and knee injuries.
