The Pryor Daily Times is again sponsoring the 2008 Cowboy of the Year Contest. Nominations for the Third Annual Cowboy of the Year Award are now being accepted. To enter your favorite living cowboy, submit a photo along with a 500 word or less essay on why your cowboy should be honored. The stories should be about adult working cowboys. The deadline for nominations is July 12. Essays will be published in The Daily Times. Votes for the favorite entry may be cast at the Daily Times office July 16 through 23. The winner will be announced at the park July 27.
The third annual American Cowboy Trade Days in Pryor is scheduled for July 26 and 27 at the city park.
Vendors from over 10 states will be represented to buy, sell and trade all sorts of cowboy and Indian items.
There will be train rides and food available along with entertainment.
Native Oklahoman Jim Garling teaches guitar and fiddle in Guthrie at Double Stop Fiddle Shop. He has performed his mix of western cowboy and western swing music in many venues, including the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
Princess Dancing Wolf and Cimarron Ken (KayLynn and Ken Sarkey, Edmond) will entertain with music, storytelling and creative movement performances. They are Oklahoma Arts Council Artists-In-Residence.
Oklahoma Singing Cowboy Shaw Montgomery, who performs regularly in Nashville, Tenn., will also be on hand to entertain.
Artist and author Robby McMurtry, Morris, will attend. Robby has lived in Morris for almost 30 years. He is an honorary member of the Comanche Tribe, and his art is known from New York to California. He is author/illustrator of the children's book “Song of Moon Pony.” McMurtry has traveled the United States and Europe with his art, has an original painting in the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma city, and has been commissioned to design and create posters for rodeos.
Authors Laurence Yadon and Dan Anderson, formerly a Daily Times crime reporter, will be on hand with their books “200 Texas Outlaws” and “100 Oklahoma Outlaws.”
