Vietnam veterans’ moving wall coming to Locust Grove

Locust Grove Public Schools and Locust Grove Alternative Learning have been selected to host the Moving Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in April.

“We are excited about this opportunity to honor American heroes in a way that will also educate our students about sacrifices veterans have made to secure the freedoms we enjoy,” said David Cash, Superintendent of Locust Grove Public Schools.

The Wall, which will be located at Leonard Yarbrough Stadium (Highway 82 north of Highway 412), will open for round-the-clock viewing the evening of Thursday, April 17 and will remain open until noon Monday, April 21. An opening ceremony is planned for 10 a.m., Friday, April 18. A Ceremony to Honor Veterans is planned for 10 a.m., Saturday, April 19. Vietnam Veterans Association 524 and Vietnam Veterans Association 877 will conduct the Missing Man Ceremony and the Tiger Cage Ceremony on Saturday, and a Flag Retirement Ceremony will be conducted Saturday evening. There will be a Closing Ceremony at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 20.

Project director, Alternative Learning Principal Marsha Whalen, said the Moving Wall has been displayed in 1,104 communities across the United States since 1983.

“We are thrilled to be hosting The Wall, and hope that it will be a healing experience for those who served in Vietnam and an educational experience for our students,” Whalen said.

Further information about The Walls visit to Locust Grove, Oklahoma, including contact information for volunteers and events, can be found on the project Web site: www. lgvietnammovingwall.com.
