LEPC plans spring hazmat drill

Mayes County Local Emergency Planning Committee discussed plans for future training, a possible hazmat drill, and the American Red Cross Heroes Campaign at the regular monthly meeting.

Emergency Management Director Johnny Janzen is coordinating a full blown hazmat drill at one of the plants in the Mid AmericaIndustrial Park this spring.

Chouteau Fire Chief Ted Key reported funds are available through Oklahoma State University and Homeland Security for hazmat responder training. The training is for operations only and is a week-long course.

The Chouteau Fire Department is also conducting a rescue tech Ropes 1 course Feb. 9 and 12 and a Ropes 2 course March 15 and 16. The cost is $150 per student. LEPC has funds available to assist all the fire departments with necessary training programs.

Mark Ogle, Rogers and Mayes County Service Center Director for the American Red Cross, told LEPC about the “Heroes for the American Red Cross” fundraiser. Ogle suggested that the fire departments might want to do a campaign similar to their Labor Day MDA fundraiser. The Heroes campaign will take place in March in conjunction with National Red Cross Month.

“The money that is raised in Mayes County will stay in Mayes County. All organizations and individuals are encouraged to become heroes,” Ogle said.
