Steven Wayne Bowman, 32, Tulsa, formerly of Adair, died after his 2002 Buick was struck by a 2006 Union Pacific Locomotive, three miles south of Big Cabin and .2 miles east of U.S. Highway 69 in Mayes County.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, Bowman’s vehicle appeared to be stopped on Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The train was traveling southbound on the tracks, came around a bend and the engineer noticed Bowman’s vehicle on the tracks. The train struck Bowman’s vehicle in the center, between the driver’s door and the passenger door. Bowman’s vehicle traveled approximately 2,268 feet south coming to rest on the tracks.
Bowman, who was pronounced dead at the scene by medical examiner Steve Massey, was trapped in the vehicle for two hours and 45 minutes. Pryor Fire extracted him from the vehicle.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Shipman’s Funeral & Cremation, Pryor.
Neither the engineer, Brian Keith Clagg, 49, of Van Buren, Ark., nor the conductor Steven W. Kirby, 37, also of Van Buren, were injured in the collision.
Bowman was the son of Debbie and Roger Bowman. He attended Northeastern State University where he was working on his master’s degree in accounting. He had a bachelor’s degree in business. Bowman was a member of the Jaycees.
A 1992 graduate of Adair High School, Bowman is remembered for his athletic abilty on the football field. He was a football All-American and was the state high school weightlifting champion in 1992.
Bowman is survied by his parents and his two children, son, Dylan and daughter, Jordan. Funeral services are 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, in the Adair First Baptist Church with the Reverends Claude Strong and Dan Lewis officiating.
