Three plead, two go to trial

Three defendants who were scheduled for jury trial arranged a plea agreement, while one defendant began the first day of jury trial Wednesday.

John Kenneth Sutton, 48, is charged with child sexual abuse. Attorneys sorted through the list of potential jurors and finally sat a jury of six women, six men and one woman alternate. Opening statements began Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Jurors heard testimony from District Attorney’s office Investigator Eddie Griffin and the 17-year-old victim, now 19. She testified to a couple of incidents where Sutton touched her in her private area underneath her clothing. She also stated he brushed the side of her breast while scratching her back.

Testimony will continue Friday.

Meanwhile, in court this week, William Thomas, 71, is charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon for cutting another trucker’s throat during a road rage incident. Thomas pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years in the custody of the Department of Corrections (DOC). Thomas was given credit for time served in the county jail and was ordered to pay $500 in fines, $100 to the victim’s compensation assessment and all court costs.

Leron Limon, 19, is charged with lewd molestation. He pleaded guilty and the court ordered a pre-sentence investigation (PSI). After the findings of the PSI are presented to the court, Limon will be officially sentenced March 30.

Tad Franklin Scott, 46, is charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon after former conviction of a felony. The court ordered a PSI investigation and Scott will be formally sentenced March 30.

Miguel Sanchez Angeles, 20, is charged with first degree murder and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. He was scheduled for a jury trial this week, but waived his right to a jury trial and will appear for a non-jury trial Feb. 22.
